Bob,

I'm glad you enjoyed it.

You won't find that rolling the elbows out will do much of anything as far as hypertropy of the triceps, it'll just put them in a more powerful position. It gives the exerciser some extra lockout power.

If your push-up goal involves conditioning or hypertrophy for the triceps then you're absolutely correct in narrowing your hand placement.

Good article.
In step 5 I do not notice much differenct in rolling the elbows out not worth the effort IMO. I always add a set of hands together under the chest to hit the triceps much more effective.

[...] I’ve received some great feedback about my push-up article last week, it seems that it really struck home with both trainers and exercisers alike. So I’ve decided to give you the push-up progression I use with clients to make sure you’re getting the most out of your push-ups.
[...] Body bits: cheap homemade equipment, Kettlebells 101, modern life takes its toll (read: get up off your ass), a big (and funny) eye roll at the Wii, making the push-up more challenging (and fun), Tony gets his Hobbs on, tempering weight loss, a metaphor for program ADD, some knee health tips, imbalances and physical therapy (firsthand experience here, kthxbye), the government tries—and fails—again to prescribe activity guidelines (at least they got something right), metabolism may be overrated, Andrew reviews the TRX (already on my wish list), body fat doesn’t just hang around, BMI = BS.
