Welcome to GotStrengthBlog.com!

Hello all, welcome to my little bit of web space. I’m a 26 year-old private strength coach and personal trainer living in Charleston, SC. If that alone doesn’t clue you in to potential of this blog, let me spell it out for you: This is my combination business and personal blog chronicling the joys, sorrows, trials, and tribulations of a young entrepreneur trying to make it big in the fitness industry in the fourth fattest state in the fattest country of the world. That being said, I currently am enjoying life as a Yankee infiltrating the South. The whole style of life is different but I’m loving the experience. I live happily with my beautiful girlfriend in a decent apartment right outside of the city. There’s always something to do and since I’ve only been here a touch over a year there’s still plenty to explore.

I grew up in a small town in Maine, Charleston (from one Chucktown to the other, I suppose) and attended Foxcroft Academy. After graduating I matriculated to the University of Maine earning a B.S. in Business Administration (Finance Concentration) and a M.Ed in Kinesiology (Exercise Physiology Concentration) and a Ph.D in Stupid College Situations. In addition to retelling a few of those stories I seem to collect my share of new ones so be sure to watch for that. My work bio can be found on my business website, www.wilkinspower.com.

In the gym my primary interests are powerlifting and athletic development. While I don’t discount the idea of bodybuilding (we all want to look better) I feel that performance is a whole lot more important. I’d rather be strong, fast, and powerful than look like it and be weak as hell! As a result most of my training revolves around Westside powerlifting, Olympic-style lifting, and strongman lifts.

Outside the gym I’m kept busy fighting the meathead stereotype through reading fiction, philosophy, business philosophy, and history. I do a little creative writing as well as the technical writing I do for my websites and published articles. I love most music and have a pretty varied taste in films. I don’t get to watch much television (that’s probably better for me, anyway) but I like the Discovery and History channels. As far as shows I like The Family Guy, CSI, The Office, and the now discontinued SportsNight (the best show on television… Ever.). I’ve never been able to get into the reality TV thing, so I’m afraid I can’t really hold an intelligent conversation on that topic.

I grew up a country boy so like outdoor activities like hiking, camping, and fishing. I’m looking forward to spending some time in the South Carolina woods once life slows down a little! I have some new areas to explore.

Keep coming back while I open up about everything from the seedy underbelly of the gym industry to the joy of helping a middle-aged woman fit into the clothes she hasn’t worn since high school to seeing a high school football player sign his Division I National Letter of Intent and everything between. I can’t promise you’ll enjoy the ride, but I can promise the occasional chuckle, a few ups and downs, and some useful product reviews. Until the next time, get strong or die trying!
